UNIVERSITY NEWCOMERS IMPRESS AS 08/09 SEASON GETS UNDERWAY
Date: 16 November 2008
The 2008/09 British tchoukball season kicked off in style this weekend with university newcomers showing their strength from the beginning.
Leeds Metropolitan and Bournemouth universities, both making their debut appearances in mainstream domestic competition, impressed spectators and won matches against experienced opposition - setting the bar for a feisty season.
The first 08/09 National League event was held at the University of East Anglia SportsPark in Norwich. 9 teams competed to win the day's competition but also mark up points on the season's league table - introduced this year.
Despite early difficulties against Leeds Met, last season's winners Broadland Blazers appeared on form winning top points from the day. Portsmouth 1s also performed well - winning a tight 49 – 46 match against Liphook but losing out to Broadland in the final. Portsmouth’s second nine followed their team mates by finishing a nail-biting 42-all draw again Broadland Ladies. Although losing, Bournemouth University held a more experienced Portsmouth side to a 6 point final score whilst Southampton University showed their new players can cut it with the rest of the field.
Ashley Thompson, captain of University of Southampton Tchoukball Club, said:
“Although we were slightly disappointed with some of our results, we were very happy with individual performances – especially as this was the first major tournament for five of our players.
“The level of talent and enthusiasm shown by our new players was exceptional and the experience they gained will stand them in good stead for future competitions.”
