TCHOUKBALL LANDS PODIUM FINISH AND £1000 IN NORWICH UNION COMPETITION
Date: 01 November 2008
Tchoukball's flagship schools development programme has finished third and won £1000 in the 2008 Norwich Union Community Sports Fund.
New Year New Sport, designed to boost the number of teachers delivering tchoukball in secondary schools, bagged 450 votes from members of the public who backed our campaign.
The money is to be ploughed back into New Year New Sport which, from September 2008, will be available across the UK.
Mel Hibberd, Suffolk area manager for the programme, highlighted its success at bringing a new and exciting sport to young people. She said:
“New Year New Sport really took off in Suffolk with several schools welcoming tchoukball with open arms.
“It's great to win recognition, and of course some cash, for a fantastic project like this. I hope it encourages more schools across the country to take part in New Year New Sport and introduce their students to an athletic, inclusive but ultimately fun sport.”
Stuart Moore, Partnership Development Manager for Westbourne School Sport Partnership in Suffolk, said:
“When I heard about tchoukball and the New Year New Sport programme, I recognised it as exactly the type of sport that would attract our sporty and less sporty students.
“The teacher training the TAGB delivered at our school was well received by staff from across the partnership. We bought eight sets of tchoukball equipment and haven't looked back.
“We are now teaching tchoukball during curriculum time, considering offering it as an assessment sport for GCSE PE and organising interschool matches. I would urge all schools and School Sport Partnerships to try tchoukball.”
